A regional commuter benefit bill that was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown will allow companies in the Bay Area more options to offer their employees pre-tax commuting benefits.
Starting Jan. 1, 2013, Bay Area businesses with more than 50 employees can offer commuting benefits to employees who work more than 20 hours a week as part of a pilot program that will last up to four years, according to a release from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
Those benefits include: options to pay for transit, vanpool or bicycling expenses with pretax dollars; transit or vanpool subsidy of up to $75 a month; free vanpool or shuttle operated for or by the employer; or a customized transit program, according to the release.
“This bill will reduce payroll taxes, cut commute costs, reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the Bay Area,” said Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the Air District, in a release.
